Power supplies testing

How to test my Power Supply with blowing fuses problem

If you are having trouble with a Power Supply blowing fuses and are not sure if you got the problem fixed, here is a tip.
Get a lamp socket with 2 extending leads and a light bulb.
Solder alligator clips on the leads.
Put the clips in place of the fuse.
Power up the Power Supply and turn on the bulb.
If the bulb goes extremely bright on power up, the short is still present. If it goes dim more than likely the Power Supply will start working properly. It may take a few seconds or flicker if the power supply is a Switching Power Supply. This will save you time and money!

Interview with Professional Electronic Repairers from Florida

Interview with Professional Electronic Repairers from Florida smps book

Jestine Yong - How long have you been in the Electronic Repair line and at what age
you own your first repair shop?

Steve - 18 years. I owned my first repair shop at the age of 18. I actually got
interested in electronics at a very young age though. I was fascinated at how all those
“pretty-colored” parts could do such wondrous things. I was hooked at first glace.

Jestine Yong - Where are your company located and what is the name of your
company?

Steve - I currently manage a new repair shop that just opened in Lakeland, Florida
(USA) called "Mid-Florida Electronics, LLC". This shop is an expansion of the
business I've worked for the past 8 years. I've always run the electronic repair
department and we have grown to the point where we needed our own storefront and
repair space. And that's where we are now. It may be a "new business" but it's far
from new, only a new name and location.

Jestine Yong - What is your education background?

Steve - High school diploma is the extent of my formal studies. I took basic
electronics courses in my last three years of high school. However, I actively work to
keep up with technology and to learn more about the things I already deal with. So,
the real answer is that my usable education is ongoing to this day.    That’s the one
thing we all share as repairmen.

Jestine Yong - Does the courses help you in Electronic repair?

Steve - In some ways, yes. The thing with the basic electronics classes I took is that it
taught me some basics but it didn’t teach me anything about how to apply that
knowledge to actual working situations. I already knew most of what was taught in
the courses because I’d been studying and tinkering on my own for years already. If I
wanted to design circuits it would be a different story. But as it was, I still had to
obtain my practical knowledge in the field, from other technicians, books and on my
own.

Jestine Yong - Have you conduct any electronic repair courses before? And what is
the name of the courses?

Steve - I have taught some electronics and repair techniques to others but never in a
formal class setting.

Jestine Yong - Do you have a website?

Steve - Not at the moment. Currently I’m an administrator for the website
www.tvrepairtips.org. If you wish to join you are always welcome to do so. Our
membership is restricted, however, to people currently working in the television (and

monitor) repair business. We have a forum and a repair tips database. A lot of our
members (such as myself) work on many types of equipment, not only televisions.

How to Easily Understand The Functions Of Switch Mode Power Supply

How to Easily Understand The Functions Of Switch Mode Power Supply

Troubleshooting linear power supply was quite easy as compare to switch mode power supplies (SMPS). AC voltage enters to the primary side of linear transformer and then converted the AC into a lower or higher AC voltage depending on the secondary winding. The output AC voltage is then rectified and filtered by a diode and capacitors to produce a clean DC voltage. SMPS fonctions

If there is a problem in the linear transformer circuit, I can say that it is very easy to locate the fault. This is somehow different in the case of a switch mode power supply. The designs were complicated and some technicians found it quite hard to fully understand how the switch mode power supplies work.

The working principle of switch mode power supply is different from the linear type. First the AC voltage will enter to a full wave rectifier (bridge rectifier) which produces an uneven DC output and then filtered by a large capacitor (usually 220 micro farad and up to 450 volts)…

Troubleshooting And Repairing ATX Power Supply

Troubleshooting And Repairing ATX Power Supply (Brought to you by Jestine Yong)

ATX Power Supply repairI hope that you have enjoyed the short report of “The Easy Way To Understand Switch Mode Power Supply”.  Here I would like to share another article with you that talks about how I have solved a slightly higher output voltages in an ATX power supply. Due to this higher output voltages condition, the CPU would not boot. Let’ start- One of my customers had asked me to repair his ATX power supply. I told him to get a new one (since it was very cheap nowadays) but he said he couldn’t find one that suits his customer’s CPU. He wanted a power supply that is either same size or smaller then the original one with same or higher specification but all he could find was a standard size ATX power supply! For your information, the standard size ATX power supply can’t fit into the PC. As a favor to my customer, I took up this repair job. Repair ATX

When the power supply was switched on, measurements were taken. The results were over voltage. The 12 volts line shot up to 13 + volt and the 5 volts line became 5.6 volts.   After the casing was removed, I found it very dirty and I used a vacuum cleaner and a brush to clean off the dirt. Then I saw four filter electrolytic capacitors had bulged and you could see it at the top of the capacitor.
